 |
|
In 1975, San Fernando Valley teen Joan Larkin reinvents herself as Joan Jett, a guitarist who wants to form an all-girl punk band. She pitches the idea to a sleazy manager, Kim Fowley, who pairs her with a drummer and then searches for a face: he finds Cherie Currie, at 15 the perfect jailbait image for his purpose; by luck, she can sing. Two others round out the band, "The Runaways." Fowley books a tour, signs them to Mercury Records, and packs them off to crowds in Japan. Seeds of conflict sprout early: Fowley puts Cherie front and center in the publicity, she's soon strung out on pills and vodka, and jealousies arise. Without adult supervision, where can Joan and Cherie end up? |

yes i agree Dakota and Kristen are smoking, Great job by them, but this movie is missing a key element , i will blame Joan Jett and Cheri Currie along with their writters for this missing element, that element would be the most talented member of the Runaways, Lita Ford... do they even mention her name in this movie ???? she was the hottest, the coolest and the best musician in the band.... shame on whoever wrote her outa the script, .....

This flick rocks, and I mean that in every way possible. As someone who lived the '70's it was a blast to see the kinds of girls I knew doing things that the mommies of today (who did it) REALLY don't want their daughters to see. Kristen Stewart bored me to tears in Twilight flicks, but she kicked ass as Joan Jett, and Dakota Fanning has never done a bad role in her entire life. Playing Cherrie Currie at 15, while 15, was an awsome performance that Dakota can notch-up in her amazing career arc. Michael Shannon put himself on the map with me forever as Kim Fowley, and I love him in Boardwalk Empire. The Seventies came back to life, with bisexual girls exploding in freedom and creativity while being the wild stoners they actually were. The interview with Cherrie Currie today (unbelievably hot at 50!) was great too. SEE THIS FLICK!

A competent yet uninspired take on the band's history from which it receives its title, Floria Sigismondi attempts to paint a picture of unfettered youth in 1970's Los Angeles, but ultimately is unable to finish what she started. A strong first two acts with impressive performances from both of its leads (Stewart and Fanning) gets the audience invested, only to leave them unfulfilled by an aimless conclusion. Michael Shannon shines (as always) as the irreverent band manager Kim Fowley and brings humor to what would have been a rather tedious investigation into teenage angst. Certainly not for everyone, those who are fans of the band or music in general will enjoy the quality of the music segments and the mostly well-crafted recreation of the era. Everyone else will have to subsist on the performances alone in an effort to ignore the rather bland story structure.

Kristen and Dakota actually pulled this one off. It wasn't over-the-top-hard-core but it did give insight into the beginning of female rock artists. Dark and moody but entertaining.

this was really good, i liked it, i also love how Kristen's roll is played(it's different) and the same for Dakota. Dakota's roll was shocking to me, but she played it off really good, around-of-applause to the rest of the actors:P

Great movie to see. Dakota kicked ass in this, Wow grown up! I had the honor of meeting Joan Jett at one of my gigs at Don Hills NYC 1999, I belief she had interest possibly in signing my band (Deviant Behavior). My band and friends of Joan as well as Courtney love, John Waters,Jane County in my dressing room smoking pot. We all got kicked out for a little while at least. One of the greatest moments of my life!!! But like every rock and roll story things ended sour we never got signed. Everything that could go wrong did. Rock and Roll truly is way of life but there is nothing easy about it, and you can never forget the experience and freedom of it because it wasn't freedom given it was the freedom you choose to take even when they tell you they can't. God bless The Runaways for their inspiration they will live forever.

This movie was pretty good. Nice to see how it all went down. The actors worked really hard at making the movie as close to the real thing. And Lita Ford is mentioned in the movie, she is the bitch.

very good flick - ignore the synopsis, it couldn't be more contrite. great soundtrack, great acting, good story. a little known slice of the 80's punk movement; definitely worth a go. 7.5/10.
